Chapter 37 Night Visitor (Two)
- It must have been around one in the morning when Becca came awake with a jolt and lay still in her bed, not entirely sure what had woken her up. The night was still and quiet, but she knew that she must have heard something, and that was why she was awake. She was something of a light sleeper, and even sounds that weren't really loud could wake her up, so she dismissed it as something that wasn’t important and was about to drift off to sleep once more, when the same sound came again … a very light knock on her back door.
- Becca sat up slowly, not knowing what had made the knock, as she could not believe that it would be a human being in her backyard at that time of the night. The tap came again, this time a little louder, but not so loud that it would be heard too far away. It sounded as though whoever was there did not want other people to hear that they were knocking. Becca sat in bed with her heart in her throat, totally scared out of her wits. On one hand, she reasoned as she tried to calm herself, a burglar would not be knocking on her door so timidly. Maybe it was a small animal or something. Deciding to go and check, she swung her legs down from the bed and was putting them into her slippers when another series of knocks came, these ones loud enough to awaken the dead, but they weren’t coming from her backyard this time. Instead, they seemed to be coming from Sandra’s house.
- The stillness of the night made everything so creepy and Becca wondered who was knocking so loudly … or rather, banging on her neighbor’s door by this time of the night. She continued on her way to her back door and was just about to place her ear against the door to listen since all was quiet, for now, when the timid knock came again, and this time, it was accompanied by the unmistakable gurgle of a baby, which was quickly stopped as though someone had placed a hand over the baby’s mouth.
