Chapter 27

  • Adeline's POV
  • The conversation with Ethan stayed in my head all night after that day. Marilyn tried to distract me by talking about the man she met last night, who surprisingly didn't want to sleep with her and just wanted to watch movies in bed. "That boy was weird, but I liked that he was different, you know?" she said, wiping the grease from her mouth from the piece of chicken she was chewing, "Yeah, it's weird you didn't force it, but maybe that's what you need, someone to shut that yard off you!" I was joking.
  • I was grateful for her sincere efforts to brighten my day, but sometimes a nagging worry would creep into my mind. It seemed she had become so deeply entwined with my life that she might have lost track of her own. Our casual conversation took an unexpected turn when I casually asked, "Have you ever thought about getting married?" Surprised, she came up with an honest answer: "Well, honestly, my parent's marriage wasn't exactly a shining example, so my faith in lifelong commitment ended there."
