• “Xander, why are you doing this to me?” I asked with all the annoyance I felt. “If you ever had even a shred of affection for me, you would stop torturing me in this way. Why can’t you leave me alone?”
• “Selene, I love you.” He wiped my face with his sleeve before I knew I was crying. “I love you so much that it hurts. I love you so much that I cannot even think to let you go. Why is this hard for you to believe?”
• “How can you ask me that?” I snapped at him. “You found your mate and you didn’t reject her. Doesn’t that mean you’ve chosen to be with her?” My voice was loud and choked with emotions. “Look, I don’t blame you for finding your destiny. It’s a happy thing but stop trying to fool me.”
