She hated seeing her daughter this heartbroken, but had Sophia said yes to Elise's proposal- she would be the one heartbroken. And she felt for Sophia as well. Because despite it all, Sophia wasn't a heartless girl who didn't have any regard for anyone's feelings. Including her own. That's why she turned her down.
