Chapter 17

  • Following through on his commitment to Eleanor, Zachary remained in the kitchen.
  • He glanced around at the other messes that had accumulated on the counter and decided to clean them up himself. After that, he walked over to the oven and checked on the progress of the chicken. To pass the time, he either cleaned up the other side of the kitchen or reorganized the shelves to make the most of his limited time. The chicken was eventually done after about 30 minutes of cooking. He took a look at it, pricked the skin with a toothpick to see whether it was cooked all the way through to the center. Once he was satisfied, he returned the dish to the oven, which had been turned off and left it there until dinner time.
  • "Hey bro," he said as he walked into the living room, attracting the attention of his closest buddy. Marcus could be found comfortably lounging on the sofa with a snack in his hand, engrossed in an episode of a television show. Neither Zachary nor Marcus had noticed Zachary's failure to meet him earlier, nor was Zachary concerned that Marcus would see his company's surveillance system on the television screen since he was confident that it was not visible on the screen. When he was in the house and did not need to search for anything, he would always switch off the security camera from showing in the living room. However, on Eleanor's first day, he was looking at something and had forgotten to switch it off when they arrived at their destination.
