Chapter 4

  • As soon as I wake up and get up, my body complains from having slept on the couch. I open the curtains letting the light illuminate every part of the place and then, in my search to make myself a coffee, I had to rummage through the boxes until I found a mug. I poured that coffee liquid and took a sip while leaning on the counter, realizing that I had taken too long to organize everything, I really should have formalized the move a week ago but I had been postponing everything, just like going to buy food.
  • I walk to my room determined to finish everything today at last, as soon as I enter my eyes land on the silver rectangle shining on the desk. I approach it and pick it up when I turn it on, three messages appeared on the screen: two were from Allie asking about the new phone and what I would do with it, the remaining message was from Christian Bornout saying that it was not a bother to have bought a new phone for me and justifying his action with the phrase "how will you know if you got the job or not?"
  • "As if you give new phones to all the girls who came out of the interview," I mutter in complaint.
  • Besides, it's not like it would take me a month to buy a cell phone, right? I reply to Allie's message saying that I would return it as soon as I bought another one, that this was just a loan, and I leave the phone in its place to look for my clothes in the closet and get into a warm artificial rain. When I come out dressed in light yellow shorts, a white tank top with anchor prints, and my Converse shoes, I grab a small brown bag where I keep the phone and the keys to the truck as well as the apartment. As I leave, I decide to go towards the stairs to start going down, I head towards the parking lot noticing that next to my truck there was a green Jeep with a guy loading a surfboard into it.
  • "Hello 503," he greets when he sees me.
  • "Hi, Guillian."
  • "Are you going somewhere?"
  • "To buy food," I reply and see Kenji poking his head out the window. "And you guys?"
  • "The shorty really likes the beach," he explains, shrugging. "Do you want to come?"
  • "Maybe another day."
  • Guillian nods silently with a smirk on his lips, he walks around his truck, gets in, and leaves the parking lot saying goodbye to me. I get into my truck and head to the supermarket.
  • After an hour and a half of driving, I took out the last bags full of food and other goodies as well as the phone vibrating in the bag due to Allie's insistent calls who decided to help me organize the apartment and was inside complaining about the lack of food.
  • "I can't believe you bought this," she exclaims from the kitchen as soon as I step inside.
  • I furrow my brow not understanding what she meant, walking to the kitchen where I find her holding a box of cereal looking at it strangely as if it were something foreign.
  • "What's wrong with it? It's my favorite cereal."
  • I drop the bags on the floor and take the red box in my hands to leave it on the counter.
  • "I thought you were almost 23, not 10, Eryn."
  • I roll my eyes at her comment and start taking out the rest of the things, I knew I should have already outgrown my taste for Lucky Charms but I loved it, especially the little marshmallows with shapes, and like Allie, my brother had tried to get me to stop eating them by hiding the cereal boxes but it was impossible so he ended up giving up and leaving me as a lost cause in need of government help.
  • When we managed to give everything a place and order, we both collapsed on the couch and drank the beer I had brought at Allie's request and as a thank you.
  • "He probably likes you," she comments out of the blue playing with the bottle.
  • "Who am I supposed to like?"
  • "That Bornout guy."
  • "What are you talking about?" I ask, leaving the beer on the small table. "This man could have any girl besides you know very well that I'm not ready for relationships again."
  • "I don't think he's like that bastard, Eryn, he could even be the guy you're looking for," she comments, reaching out to take my hand in a gesture of support. "You should give love another chance."
  • I grimace in exhaustion and firmly shake my head, closing the subject and preventing the caged memories from returning to my mind. Allie sighs, but stops talking about it and withdraws her hand, knowing that I'm not ready and still haven't overcome those events. It had only been a year and a half since I had managed to get out of that situation.
  • In the end, Allie decided to stay the night with the excuse that she didn't want to see her mother and her boyfriend because they were in that stage where they didn't separate at all from each other, as the night fell, I wondered if I would ever be crazy in love with someone again. I look at her sleeping on the couch as I get up to find a blanket for her, in the distance I hear the phone ringing, announcing a message. I cover Allie carefully so as not to wake her up and walk to my room to find the phone. When I find it, I see the notification that was there and my heart races.
  • It was an email with the address of Bornout companies, and in it, with a few short lines it was written:
  • We look forward to seeing you on Monday starting at 7:30 at the Bornout offices to begin your new work experience. Welcome.
  • A part of my brain wanted to tell me that the incident with Christian had caused this, while the other part wanted to convince me that it was because I had passed the interview. But between whether it was or not, I decided to sleep and hope that the weekend would pass faster than I expected.
