Chapter 19

• I woke up earlier than usual to get ready for work, although I avoided looking in the mirror to see the extent of my bruises. First, I had to change the bandage so I wouldn't worry about it all day, then I put on a long"sleeved gray dress that covered most of the wounds on my arms, black stockings, and white sneakers because I didn't want to walk in heels all day. Just as I managed to tie one of the sneakers, the door to my room opened, revealing a ready Allie."
• "What are you doing?" she asked.
• "I want to go to work," I replied as I struggled to tie the other sneaker. "I've been taken care of perfectly for two weeks, but I need to get back to my normal life."
