Chapter 12

  • It was clear that he wanted to keep asking questions, but he just shrugged and leaned his head against the opposite wall of the elevator. I must say that we were trapped for two long hours until finally the Los Angeles Fire Department, called by Cassie when she noticed our prolonged absence, managed to open the emergency exit on the roof and get us out through the 26th floor. Obviously, we would have taken longer in that elevator if it hadn't been because I ended up trapped with one of the most imposing men. In the end, the paramedics determined that I had no injuries from the jolt the elevator gave when the emergency brakes were used.
  • Bornout decided it was best for me to go home and rest. Luckily, he didn't tell anyone about my anxiety attack, which I appreciated. I didn't tell my brother either when I got home and he asked about my day. I knew it wasn't right to lie to him about my situation, but what else could I do? I had enough to deal with having to remember everything that had happened and knowing that the anxiety attacks had returned because I forgot to bring my pills. When I managed to reach my room, the first thing I did was put that orange bottle in my work bag.
  • So when I woke up the next morning, my brother had gone to do who knows what, but he had left toast with honey and coffee in my favorite red mug with Christmas symbols, even though it was March. I ate breakfast calmly, enjoying every bite. When I finished, I left the dishes in the sink, took a quick shower, and dressed in a black striped blouse, black jeans, a beige blazer, and black heeled booties. I grabbed my things and headed to downtown Los Angeles. It was a miracle that I arrived on time, even though the city was a total chaos of traffic at that hour.
