Chapter 38

• I was sitting at one of the many tables there, sipping on the champagne they had brought me. Christian had gone in search of his parents, greeting everyone he encountered along the way. I was in the midst of a slight crisis, unsure whether to continue sitting holding the glass as if my life depended on it or to get up and walk around the place, even though I would be completely alone and Christian would take longer to find me. I decided to stay seated. I remembered Christian's mother, but at that moment I was just another employee and now I was going to be introduced to her as his girlfriend. I let out a sigh, only to notice someone sitting next to me.
• "If you sigh like that, something is wrong," she points out, looking at me intently. "Is everything okay, dear?"
• "Yes, it's just that I've never been to a party like this before."
