- Lucas could not help but notice that Scarlett had been distant since the ball, and it had bothered him. She flared up at the slightest provocation and had even refused him touching her.
- He knew that things had gotten worse when she stopped sleeping in his bedroom and took to Daphne's own instead. When he asked her, she said she did not like the dark sheets, and the chandelier lit up the room unusually and was inconvenient for sleeping.
- "I will send for the interior designer tomorrow to change everything to your taste," he had told her. She asked him not to bother but it bothered him more. He spent most nights in his study, immersed in work and thinking about her.
