Chapter 23

• "Kenny is spiteful,”
• Dante concluded as he watched the drama unfold. As Kenny numerated all her friend’s sins, his eyes were fixed on Ugo. He saw the pain, Kenny inflicted. She was close to tears but he watched her bit down her lips to stop them as she tried to control her emotions. He’d only opened his mouth to prevent her from voicing out her objection, he hadn’t wanted her to be blamed for the end of his engagement with Kenny. He didn’t know why but his instinct was to protect her. Besides, he had already made up his mind to end the engagement, he was no coward to let anyone do his duty even if it was convenient. He was the one who asked Kenny to marry him, so he must end the engagement himself.
• However, it never occurred to him that Kenny would want to take out her frustration on Ugo. All she had done was speak highly of Kenny, and it was out of love and concern for her friend that she had spoken and not out of jealousy as Kenny implied.
