Chapter 60

  • Jason’s hands trembled slightly as he held out his phone to Lucy, his expression a mix of urgency and yearning. His voice was thick with emotion, his eyes searching hers for some hint of what she was thinking, what she was feeling. " Here, type in your number, ” he said, almost in a whisper. “ I’ll call you so we can talk. Not here. "
  • Lucy stared at the phone in his hand, her mind racing. This was happening too fast. She had dreamed of seeing him again, of maybe explaining everything, but not like this — not in the middle of a store, with strangers watching their every move. She nodded slightly, her hands still shaking as she took the phone from him and typed in her number. Her fingers felt clumsy, the numbers blurring slightly as she tried to steady herself.
  • Jason watched her carefully, his breath shallow. He wanted to say so much more, to ask her why she had disappeared, to tell her how much he had missed her. But he knew this wasn’t the time or place. There were too many eyes, too many ears, and too many emotions flooding the space between them.
