Chapter 30

• For a split second, Jason froze, unable to believe what he was seeing. But before he could fully process it, the cars behind him honked, jolting him back to reality. He pressed the gas pedal just enough to move forward and pulled over to the side of the road as quickly as he could. His mind raced as he parked, frantically scanning the sidewalk to keep track of her.
• He jumped out of the car, not caring if he left it running, and hurried toward the store. But as he got closer, panic set in—she was gone.
• “ Hey! ” he called out, half-hoping she might hear him and turn around. But the street was busy, filled with people going about their day, oblivious to the desperate man weaving through the crowd.
