Chapter 18

  • If the outside of Prime Magazine was stunning, the inside was even more so. The walls, disappearing into high ceilings, had been painted in fine splashes of cream and brown, which suited perfectly with the stylish brown chairs arranged around large, glass tables. The floor was hardwood, like the one in her apartment, but the wood gleamed, casting different patterns of light as Stephanie walked. She felt like she was in heaven. The air con stationed at specific locations, blasted cool air, cooling off the sweat on Stephanie’s neck.
  • Pausing at the receptionist manning the desk, she stated her reason for being here, and the old lady frowned at her from behind small frame glasses. There was a purple vase on the desk, and Stephanie occupied herself with it while the lady did some typing on her computer. Her flashy nails hit the keys with a perfect flourish, and it made Steph wonder how long she’d been working in the magazine. But, she didn’t ask, she didn’t want to.
  • “You’re terribly late. Mr. Jaccobs Jacob is in a two–hour meeting. Just hope you don’t get fired so soon,” she muttered the last part under her breath, and Stephanie leaned in, ears perked.
