Chapter 56 Broken Chains
- My lungs burned as though I had been pulled through flames as I begged for air. My surroundings were an uncontrollably whirling cyclone of light and shadow. I made an effort to concentrate, but the discomfort was too much. The weight of my limbs made me feel as if invisible chains had encircled me and drawn me farther into the emptiness.
- Then, however, it ceased.
- The hold that had been choking me for so long suddenly relaxed. I sensed it—the Collectors' grip eroding, slipping away. Something seemed to have broken their bond with me. Although it pulsed slightly, the mark on my skin—the one they had used to manipulate me—did not burn as it had previously.
