Chapter 3 Whispering Forest

  • The Whispering Forest. The name came to me without warning, as though it had been pulled from thin air. Gnarled branches of ancient trees, resembling the fingers of deities, towered above the ground. The air smelled like moss and damp earth, and the bark of the trees itself seemed to be humming quietly and almost unnoticed.
  • With my boots crushing gently underneath, I moved forward carefully. Every sound of rustling leaves and the far-off cry of nocturnal animals was amplified in the silence, heightening my senses. The crystal orb was securely gripped, illuminating the path with a subtle glow created by its brightness.
  • The murmuring became louder as I advanced more into the forest; it was like a symphony of quiet whispers tumbling through the grassland. The forest appeared to be alive, observing and conversing with me. A mixture of interest and fear surge through my heart. As I was unaware of the threat that lingered in the background of this discovery.
  • Finally, I came to a spot where a tiny, sparkling pool of water, it's surface was covered with a silvery sheen as moonlight drenched through the above. I squatted next to it, looking down into its depths. With concentration and eyes wide, my reflection was seen in the immaculately clean water.
  • A shadow flashed at the edge of my vision, yet there was more than just that in the reflection. I looked over my shoulder, with my breath stuck in my throat. Even though the jungle was silent, the whispering had become louder and more persistent.
  • The voices seemed to be saying, "Seek the truth," in a chorus of anxious whispers. "But beware the darkness that lies within."
  • I stood up abruptly and looked around the bush, my grip tightening on the orb. At the edge of the water,my gaze was drawn to a massive, old tree whose bark was covered with odd, luminous designs that pulsed with a sinister light.
  • As I got closer, a strong burst of wind blew across the bush, rustling the leaves and sending shivers once more down my spine as I reached out to touch the symbols. The whispering voices intensified, their words a disordered cacophony that filled my head, and the symbols grew brighter.
  • "Evelyn..."
  • Fear shining through my eyes, I turned around. The voice that had greeted was distinct, brisk, and different. It was the voice of the stranger who'd spoken to me in my apartment. From the shadows he appeared, his eyes glittering with an array of hatred and curiosity.
  • He spoke in a smooth, cold voice, "You've come a long way. But are you really aware of what you're looking for? You cannot comprehend the power you possess in your hands."
  • I stepped backwards, and said with a shaky but resolute voice "What do you want from me?"
  • With a slow, hunting smile, the stranger grinned. "I desire what is rightfully mine," he murmured, keeping his gaze locked on the crystal ball. "The book you weild come with a price, yet it holds the secret to unexplainable power. Can you be able to afford it?"
  • The pool of water rippled and bubbled before I gave a reply, and the ground beneath my feet shook. The symbols on the tree burned with a blinding light, and the murmuring voices became more desperate and louder.
  • Gathering bravery, I faced the unfamiliar person. and responded, "I'll find the truth," in a firm voice despite the fear that filled my chest. "And I'll do whatever it takes to break the curse."
  • The stranger grinned more broadly and stepped forward. "Excellent," he remarked. "Remember, Evelyn, that every decision you make the consequences are inevitable. There is danger on your path, and not everyone who pursues the truth makes it out alive."
  • He then disappeared into the darkness, leaving me by herself in the area. The shaking of the ground ceased, and the murmur of whispering voices subsided. I inhaled deeply, uncertainties and concerns racing through my head.
  • Though the stakes were higher than ever, I realized the need to press on with the journey. And had to proceed cautiously since the jungle held mysteries that may either save or destroy me
  • An unexpected movement drew my attention as I turned to walk away from the area. Looking down into the pool, to see my expression, I saw the face of a young woman, desperate and afraid and my eyes widened in shock.
  • When I extended my hand to touch the water, the reflection disappeared, leaving my own shocked face to stare back at me.
  • With a heart racing, I moved away from the pool. Then soft voices had surfaced again, their words leaving a lingering impression. I felt a need to track down the young lady in order to learn the truth about her relationship to the old book and the mysterious forest.
  • But the ground shook again as I turned to go, and a low, husky growl resounded through the trees. Freezing in panic evident in my face, I
  • grabbed hold of the crystal ball and began to run, the muttering voices getting louder as I went.
  • The trees closed in around me, their branches seems to whisper secrets of old. The feeling of darkness was drawing nearer as I stumbled over roots and rocks with the whispering voices becoming louder and more demanding.
  • A single, intense question racing through my mind, "What lies at the heart of the Whispering Forest?"
  • And the answer seemed to be whispering in the breeze, just out of reach, but excitingly close as she dived deeper into the shadows. The woodland held its breath, anticipating her next move, and Evelyn realized the true test was still ahead.
  • I managed to break out of the underwood and onto another with one last, frantic burst of energy. However, what I had witnessed there chilled my blood.
  • As I journed further, A person covered in darkness stood in the middle of the clearing, its eyes gleaming with a strange light. The whispering voices reached an extremely loud tone as the figure raised a hand. A surge of panic swept over me,but also an odd calmness washed me, as if the forest itself was directing me in the direction of my fate.
  • In spite of the panic that was taking hold of me, I asked in a firm voice. "Who are you?" "And what do you want from me?"
  • With its eyes locked on the crystal orb in my hands, the creature moved forward. "I am the forest's protector," it murmured, a deep, ample echo in its voice. "And the solution to discovering its mysteries lies with you, Evelyn. But heed my warning: the road ahead is dangerous, and the decisions you make will decide our collective fate."
  • I stepped forward, ready to confront the darkness ahead, as the guardian raised its hand again the wood burst into a brilliant blaze of light.
  • Leaving me by myself in the clearing as the light went out, the voices only a faint echo in my head. I inhaled deeply.
  • With one last, desperate burst of vitality I moved on.
