• Jonathan could hear Elliot's complaints from a distance over the phone. It was good to see him distressed, Jones thought it only fair to make him suffer a little for his previous behavior, since he had been insensitive enough not to care about his feelings, as he thought.
• But at the same time, he felt his heart clench knowing that he was suffering from guilt, and although he knew that his brief indifference wouldn't kill him, Jones was soft enough to melt listening to his lamentations.
