Chapter 15

  • The white walls, the smell of alcohol, and the bright lights everywhere were enough to give anyone a massive headache if they were present. The hospital environment isn't a pleasant or cozy place. It's a heavy space where, for every life being born, an exorbitant amount is being lost.
  • Walking past the maternity ward, Eric spent a good amount of time marking the faces of each baby in the incubators. He looked at their chubby cheeks, round, plump faces, and bright, lively eyes. It was heartening in a way. Seeing those little lives there gave me a glimmer of hope that there's some sort of purpose to being born and coming into this world.
  • He didn't consider himself wise enough to know what his life's purpose was or that of his grandmother, who was now closer to death than she had ever been. But he knew that people aren't in your life by chance. All those years he spent in the loving and comforting company of his grandmother had definitely been instrumental in shaping him into a better person. He was sure of that. Yet, it was difficult to feel optimistic in the face of such a complicated situation. Fortunately, he wasn't alone.
