Chapter 8

  • Alexandra Remember Me
  • I slipped into the slave chambers unnoticed, most of the omegas were already asleep in their cots scattered throughout the room. The moon shined unusually bright tonight, its glow softly illuminating the slave chambers like a nightlight. I shoved the towel I had left to dry under my bed, remembering Marilyn’s words. I couldn’t afford to catch anyone’s attention if I were to live to tell this tale one day.
  • Pulling the thin bed sheet up, I climbed into my cot and snuggled my face into the familiar sheet for the last time. I slightly turned my head towards Valerie who was fast asleep, probably dreaming about her fated mate. I would miss her and the way her eyes twinkled with excitement of the mention to one day find him, wherever he could be. I knew it was unlikely for any of us, but I held onto hope for her that she someday would. She was one of my only friends here in Shadow Pack, someone I felt that could actually understand my pain since neither of us were born as omegas. My eyes traced over her gentle features, I wish I could have told her why I had to leave. It bothered me that she would wake up in the morning and find an empty cot beside her, leaving her to worry and eventually assume that I had been killed.
  • My eyelids were heavy as I struggled to stay awake, I couldn’t stop the yawn that slipped out of my mouth. After a few minutes of fighting sleep, I decided to close my eyes for only a short period to conserve my energy for the long trek ahead. I knew I couldn’t fall asleep though, if I did, I would miss my only chance to get out of Shadow Pack, under Alpha Axton’s hold. I wondered what pack life would be like in Broken Ridge, Marilyn had said they were kind to omegas. The most important thing to me was I would be free of Alpha Axton.
  • Somewhere between the thoughts of how I planned to stay alive and the fear of death, I dozed off deep into a dream. My wolf was back, her shiny silver coat reflecting the light from the sun like it once did. We were running through the forest, the wind blowing through our fur, feeling wild and free in our true form. Suddenly, we were met with icy blue eyes that sent chills down my spine. I had never seen these eyes before but there was something breathtaking about them, something mysterious that also screamed danger deep in my gut when they stared at me. My wolf and I retreated in the direction we came from before meeting with the stare of those memorizing blue eyes, zig zagging through the trees and hopeful to lose the wolf in our tracks.
  • The blue eyes that had me so entranced belonged to a big black wolf, the wolf was bigger than any wolf I had ever seen. Far bigger than Alpha Axton’s whose wolf I thought was massive. I could smell him nearby, but I couldn’t pinpoint what he smelt like exactly, I just knew he was close. My wolf and I found a stream, deciding to leap over to the other side. My wolf geared up, ready to lunge ourselves over the body of water when we were tackled to the ground, the big black wolf extended his canines. But instead of trying to rip my throat out, he marked me.
  • I gasped, abruptly awakening from my dream, sitting up on my cot and my eyes meeting the clock beside the window. It was seven minutes after two, I was late.
  • I glanced around the room, thankful that I hadn’t awoken anyone. The slave chambers was deathly silent, a pin would be heard if it dropped right now. I took a deep breath, searching for the necklace in the pocket of my brown tatted slave dress. I was relieved to find it still in the pocket where I had left it, somehow I felt that Luna Fraya’s strength was still with me when I had her necklace nearby. I shoved the brown slave dress under my pillow, carefully scanning the room for any awoken eyes and then scurried through the maze of beds towards the entrance of the slave chambers. I took one last look of the massive room, no matter what happened tonight, this was the last time I’d see this place.
  • My fingers tightened around the door knob and I opened the door painfully slowly to avoid any creeks from the hinges and stepped outside. My eyes darted left to right for any sign of Marilyn. I was certain that she had left when I didn’t meet her like I had been instructed. This was my only chance to leave Shadow Pack and maybe start anew somewhere far away, totally undetected and I wasn’t even capable of following a simple set of instructions. This must be fate, if I couldn’t even get off of Shadow Pack territory, I would never survive in no man’s land.
  • I turned around, my hand reaching for the door knob to enter back into the slave chambers and return to my bed before a guard noticed me. A warm hand covered my mouth from behind, pulling me to the side of the slave chambers. I struggled to breath under the hand on my face, allowing it to muffle my voice. “Shh”, a gentle voice said.
  • The hand finally released me when we were on the side of the building and pulled on my arm to turn me around and face their direction. Marilyn stood before me in a black hooded cape covering her face, I could only see her mouth moving. “You’re late Alexandra, you need to hurry now. I spoke to Luna Sarah, she will meet you personally in the ravine close to Broken Ridge borders. The journey should take you about a day if you shift into your wolf, if you don’t, it could take over a week and will make this journey much more dangerous, my sweet girl,” she said in a low voice. “One of the guards is waiting for you at the corner of Shadow Pack territory. He will guide you in the direction which you will need to follow. Do not stop under any circumstances, stopping will attract attention. There is a point where Broken Ridge and Crescent Moon meet, do not go near Crescent Moon territory. Alpha Liam despises rogues and if his warriors find you, they will know that you are now rogue and will not hesitate to kill you.”
  • My mind raveled trying to remember all of her instructions, it felt like either way my life would soon lead to death. “Alexandra, I’m proud of you. Please don’t forget me,” she choked out. I wrestled with my own emotions, I couldn’t let Marilyn down. I owed it to her to at least try to get out of Shadow Pack. “The Moon Goddess will protect you if you follow my directions closely,” she continued and wrapped her arms around me. I couldn’t hold back the tears that were pooling in my eyes, dripping onto her black cape. She pulled off her black hooded cape and put it over my body, “so you’ll always remember me, my sweet girl,” she whispered and placed a kiss on my forehead.
  • I had forgotten what it felt like to be loved, her lips against my skin warmed my heart like a child being comforted by its mother. “I could never,” I finally replied.
  • “Go,” Marilyn said and I rushed into the forest behind the slave chambers, looking for the corner of the Shadow pack.
