- A shuffling sound rouses me from my sleep a little before dawn, I can see the sky is starting to lighten on the horizon through the open window above the cot. A rustling sound then draws my eyes to the girl before me, she is curled into a ball in the corner with her doe eyes fixed on me, she doesn't blink and nor do I.
- Very slowly, hoping to not startle the girl, I sit up from the slouch I had sunk into, maintaining eye contact, then I lean forwards with my elbows on my knees and speak quietly, as if to a bird.
