- Ethan could not believe what he saw. The cabin had been reduced to ashes, and only a few beams held up a small structure. The fire had swept through everything, leaving only a skeleton of charred wood. Smoke still filled the air, taunting, almost laughing at him for not arriving in time to help his sister.
- His lungs tightened, not only from the suffocating air that spread as he approached, but from the fear and emptiness of the thought that his twin might be trapped in that inferno.
- "Emma!" he shouted her name again, trying to reach what little remnants of the cabin were left, but Astrid, who had followed him, tried to stop him. "Let me go, damn it!"
