Chapter 26

  • Emma had no more tears to shed. Her eyes felt irritated and swollen, but at that moment she had neither the strength nor the desire to torture herself any longer. She had spent the whole day sitting outside the cabin, staring into the void, and now the sunset was coming to an end. She had spent days trying to find her brother, but Ethan didn't want to be found.
  • She had asked Endora to help find him, but her great-great grandmother had not appeared or spoken to her since her last visit. The worry tore her apart, and then there was the encounter with Astrid during one of her search expeditions. The woman had approached her, flaunting her beauty and all the well-defined curves that Emma lacked. Emma couldn't deny that she was jealous, though she had no right to be.
  • This woman was Asher's partner before she arrived, and her mother would roll over in her grave if she knew that her daughter, educated with moral values, was capable of butting into a relationship. Her rational side knew that, was aware of it, and that's why she had acted accordingly. But the irrational side, the one that didn't understand when she fell in love with Asher, and how she could love him beyond what was possible with so little knowledge of him, felt an unhealthy jealousy towards that woman.
