Chapter 61
- "Why did you try to believe in God?" he asked, not answering her.
- She filled up their plates and handed him one as they walked to the table. He took a bite, nodding in approval. She turned the music off before diving in as well. She had a feeling they were about to have a serious conversation, and she didn't want music distracting her from it.
- "My parents are both Christian, and they go to church once a month or so. When my grandmother died when I was seven, they explained to me that she was going to a better place." She smiled at the memory. "I thought they meant the mall or Disneyland or something, but I gradually realized that she was gone. I just couldn't figure out why they would call her being gone a good thing, and I was so mad. They kept trying to tell me all the things you tell little kids, you know, to get them to feel alright about someone disappearing from their lives. They said she was looking over me, that she was a star in heaven, that she was not truly gone, all that crap. And I tried to believe it, I really tried. Just didn't work."
