Chapter 31
- Nathalie finds herself in a rather discontented state regarding her relationship with Trixie. Not in the least does she feel happy about it. Nonetheless, as she reflects on her day, she realizes how much she misses Trixie's carefree laughter and engaging small talk. However, she honestly cannot muster much concern for the matter at hand. In truth, Nathalie feels happier than she has in quite some time. She acknowledges the societal expectation that she should embody the strength and independence of a woman who does not require a man. And she does embody that ideal. She truly does. Yet, despite her strong stance, there remains an undeniable excitement bubbling within her as she anticipates Ethan's arrival at her home later that evening.
- Throughout the day, it is as though Nathalie is gliding on a cloud. The children around her notice her buoyant spirit, which in turn elevates their moods as well. Perhaps a bit too elevated indeed, especially in the case of Tom and Kennedy Tomas. Despite understanding that she ought to be more authoritative with them, Nathalie finds herself unable to adopt that firmness today. She simply does not want to raise her voice at anyone. What's the harm? Perhaps a few minor infractions can be overlooked. Who truly cares in the grand scheme of things?
- After classes have concluded, Mr. Tomas enters Nathalie's classroom to inquire about how his sons are faring. He appears as though he has been deprived of sleep for what seems like an eternity, and she senses that he is on the verge of tears yet again. Upon her inquiry regarding Mallory, his gaze drops, and he lets out a heavy sigh. "She moved out already. She's found a new partner. We're set to appear in court soon to determine arrangements for the children. For the moment, I am their full-time caregiver."
