Chapter 35

  • In Greek mythology, Athena was a warrior goddess, endowed with the gifts of strategy, science, and skill. Born of Zeus, stories of her birth indicate that she emerged from his head, already adult and fully armed. The main story tells that Zeus swallowed his mother and then Hephaestus opened his head from which Athena sprang forth.
  • Athena is one of the most respected and adored deities of ancient Greece as she represented just causes and wisdom. In contrast, to her brother Ares, who represented violence and barbarism. She never married or had love affairs on any occasion, thus maintaining perpetual virginity.
  • This condition gave her an important role in enforcing sexual modesty.
