Chapter 32

  • I was washing dishes in the kitchen. It was a busy Saturday night and we were packed with customers. God, that was the downside of the restaurant being located in the heart of New York. People came in, ate, and left, only for others to take their place. I had switched roles with my colleague April, now she was serving the tables while I washed the dishes and cutlery.
  • Walter was lurking around the place. Whenever he could, he would show up at the restaurant unannounced and check if everything was going well. That made me uneasy, as his presence was the most grotesque thing I could experience. As soon as I found out that Walter was here, I knew that a bad day was coming and that in those twenty"four hours anything could happen to hurt me."
  • It wasn't long before closing time, so the dishes weren't piling up as often. Then, Walter entered the kitchen and my heart started beating fast, my legs weakened, and I focused all my attention on the rinsing cycle with my soapy, detergent"scented hands."
