Chapter 41

  • I stayed by Alaric’s side every day, never leaving his bedside. His chest rose and fell slowly, his breaths shallow. It felt like I was losing him, even though I had saved his life. Christian and Serena kept telling me to be patient, that he needed to heal himself, but I couldn't stand the waiting. They explained that the weapon used to shock him was meant to weaken wolves, and if I hadn't intervened, it would have severed Alaric’s connection to his wolf entirely and would have killed him.
  • The servants, still acted cold toward me. They obeyed, of course, preparing my meals and tending to me as ordered, but their eyes held indifference, sometimes even disdain.
  • The wolves, however, were a different story. Christian had shared with them how I had fought to protect Alaric and the lengths I had gone to save him. That seemed to earn me some respect, and for the first time, I felt like I had a place here among them.
