Chapter 3
- “Get up child, do you want something to eat?’’ a gentle voice asked.
- I could hardly find my voice, but I managed to tell the lady yes, and she helped me to my feet.
- “Thank you,’’ I told her.
- “So, we have another one. Huh?’’ a girl said, jumping down from where she was laying in a hammock. I could see an old pillow, and a sheet made out of pieces of different cloths.
- “My name is Lee-Anna,’’ I said, extending a hand.
- “I don’t care what your name is. My concern is about why these flea bags keeping throwing us weaklings—”
- “Leni!’’ the woman yelled, cutting her off. "My name is Ottilie, but just call my Ottie.'' She smiled at me.
- “I am being truthful, if we are going to escape this place, then we need people who can pull their own weight. Not some pretty girl, who I know for sure won’t last a week.’’
- The scoffed, then bumped into me.
- “Don’t mind Leni, she is overly ambitious.’’
- Leni laughed from where she was scooping up water from a wooden spoon. “You don’t want to join our regime because you are nothing but an old lady. You boomers truly are our greatest enemy, we want to excuse but all you do is nag and say bullshit.’’
- I shrugged. “But she is right, where will you escape to? And even if you do run away, there are things out there that will kill—”
- Leni threw some water from her spoon at me. “Just shut up! My and my brother is here, he and his friends are forming a plan as we speak. You’ll see, when we escape, I’ll be the one with the last laugh.’’ While laughing, Leni took a drink from her water and began to choke.
- “Serves you right,’’ the older woman said.
- “Let me show you where you will be sleeping,’’ she said, pulling me over to a makeshift table, and lifted the cloth. There, I saw a little girl fast asleep. “We don’t have much space, but Janie could use the company.’’
- The door was suddenly pushed in, I saw everyone jumping to attention. Standing up straight, so I did the same.
- “Good afternoon, Serena!’’ everyone said, except for me, because I didn’t know what to expect.
- She then pointed out me, I gulped. “Come, I have a special task for you.’’
- Leni sneakered whilst we were on our way out, Serena turned to look back at her… then wham! She was kicked in the chest, which caused her to fly back into the wall.
- After leaving the room and slamming the door behind us. Serena grabbed my face in her hands. “You better not be like those other bitches, or else it will be your head. The fools think we don’t know that they are planning an escape, I can’t wait for them to execute the plan so I can have some fun.’’ Her tone was joyful as she said it. “Now, I have a new task for you,’’ she said with a cruel smile. “You will be the new personal maid to our Alpha.’’
- “Alpha?’’
- “Yes, the leader of the pack. The most vicious wolf of all.’’
- I already knew what an Alpha was, but I didn’t understand why me.
- “His last maid died from exhaustion, anyway. You will be tending to his every need. Cooking his meals, cleaning his room and so forth.’’
- She took me outside, saying that I will be staying closer to where he slept.
- My eyes widened at the grandeur of his private mansion, its dark stone walls raised high against the afternoon sky, it was a gothic girl dream come true. The imposing structure was both majestic and intimidating, with its high arched windows and steep, gabled roof. As I followed Serena through the sprawling grounds, my anxiety grew with each step.
- Making me wonder once again, why was I chosen to be this Alpha’s personal maid. There were so many servants here before me, so why was I singled out?
- The path to the mansion was lined with neatly trimmed hedges, that lined the cobblestone walkway. To my left and right were well manicured lawns, with beautifully arranged flowers. But with each step I took, it seemed to echo in the oddly quiet afternoon, my heart raced with a mis of dread and disbelief.
- When we got to the massive oak doors of the mansion, Serena paused and pushed them open, it seemed as if she had to muster up all her strength just to do so. The sound of the heavy doors creaked on their hinges, magnifying the silence that enveloped the mansion. I stood in the threshold, my breath hitched in my throat as I looked around the vast, shadowy interior. And unlike the first place I had been in, this space was... majestic, I thought it would have been boring just as well.
- “Move!’’ Serena yelled before closing the door behind her, again she seemed to struggle.
- A thought came to my mind, Serena laughed out loud then grabbed me by the throat.
- “You think I am weak? I am by far… stronger than you, human. You couldn’t even get the door to budge. And make no mistakes, I will break your damn neck, the next time you think of such thing.’’
- I was scared, because how did she knew what I was thinking?’’
- Suddenly, I was slapped across the face.
- “Don’t be foolish, us wolves are far more superior than you lowly humans. I can read minds, so, careful with your thoughts.’’
- I got to my feet and held my head low. “I am sorry.’’
- Serena scoffed. “Of course you are.’’
