Chapter 2
- I fell face first into the mud, after having tripping over my own two feet. I was dragged along for a distance, before anyone noticed. The larger girl before me must have started to struggle with walking, because that was when she looked back.
- “You need to get up before he notices,’’ she said.
- But my feet was blistered, I was tired and hungry from having to walk for a week.
- She too fell over and began to be dragged along by the carriage our new master was riding in. He had tied me and her to the back, telling us to be brisk because the journey was long.
- Neither of us could do anything, just lay there until the end of the road to wherever we were being taken.
- Suddenly, the horse riled up, causing the carriage to tip over and the windows to break out. The splinters some how reached all the way to where we were and cut at the skin of my face.
- The man emerged of his carriage and frowned down at us. “You little pests, you caused this. Now you both own me a new suit and a new carriage.’’
- He brought his cane up, and would have hit one of us, but something slammed into him. I didn’t know if to be fearful or thankful.
- I was lifted up roughly, along with that, the shackles around my hands and feet fell off.
- “Run you two!’’ a voice yelled.
- But I was frozen, too busy watching the woman who was dressed in full black fighting with the man who just bought us.
- I guess she did want me after all, she just wasn’t willing to pay.
- I stumbled back, only to fall hard on my ass when the man shifted into a hideous creature and lashed out at her.
- The woman held up a hand, casting her spell and a bright light shun. Everyone covered their eyes except her, the werewolf blindly clawed at the air, but with his lack of vision the witch took him down by wrapping a red string around his neck. She pulled tightly, cutting his head clean off his shoulders.
- When he fell to the ground, his body went back to looking human and she placed two golden coins over his eyes.
- “I thought I told you two to run,’’ she said, coming over to where I was.
- The girl beside me went on her knees and bowed before her.
- “Get up, there is no need for that. You both are free now,’’ she told us.
- “Free? We can never be free in a place like this! Your kind have taken over the world and is killing us all for fun!’’ the girl yelled.
- The woman laughed. “They are not my kind; I am a witch. Far different from any of these filthy creatures.’’
- “I see no difference,’’ she said back.
- I took a few steps back, not wanting to suffer the witch’s wrath.
- “Young one, witches have lived alongside humans for however long since I can remember. We were persecuted and burnt at the stake, they called it the Salem witch trial at the time, but never did we lay a finger on them.’’
- She slowly began to roll her red string, ignoring the blood it was covered in.
- “We never hid, we co-existed with you humans. Plenty of you even come to us for palm readings, and so much more. Did we harm you? No, so don’t compare me to those things. I am simply here to help, to set you free so you don’t have to suffer.’’
- “But why?’’ I asked.
- “Loss of clientele. Besides that, witches don’t get along with these things.’’
- Out of nowhere, a wolf grabbed the woman by the neck and slammed her against a tree
- “Run girls!’’ she yelled.
- I did just that, turning to run and leaving the other girl behind.
- I didn’t get far before someone grabbed onto me, I let out a scream only for my face to be covered with a cloth that had a sweet smell to it. It didn’t take long for me to pass out.
- When I woke up, I was in a dark damp room that smelt like rotten meat, and I was fully aware of the shackle around my ankle.
- The heavy door suddenly opened, scraping against the floor as it did.
- “You’re alive, good. I will take you to the maids living quarters.’’ Her voice was soft and gentle, but I was certain she was anything but.
- I was roughly dragged along from the prison, having to limp behind the lady as she led me through brightly lit hall way.
- The woman then opened another heavy door, and I had to shield my eyes from the bright sunlight.
- I tried to take note of where I was going, so I could try and use it as an escape route, but as far as I could see, the old run-down castle was surrounded by high walls. There were spikes along with barb wires at the top, apart from that, there were men walking around as if to patrol the place.
- I’m sure they weren’t focused on keeping anyone out, but to keep people like me in. No doubt if we tried to run, we would be killed.
- I wanted to cry because of the harsh life that lay ahead of me, being in the dirty cellar wasn’t so bad. I had the comfort of my mother, the protection of my father and shared some laughs with my sisters.
- My mind began to drift to them, wondering if I would ever see them again. I knew my parents would never be in the position that I’m in now, simply because none of these monsters wanted anyone who had passed a certain age.
- So, most of the adults were generally left alone, but treated badly.
- I hadn’t noticed where I was going, so I accidently bumped into the woman who was taking me to only God’s knew where. She looked down at me with a scornful gaze, and I swore I saw her grey eyes flashing to red for a split second.
- Before I could apologize, her hand shot out and slapped me across the face. She didn’t even give me time to think before she slapped me again, this time it was much harder, and when I fell to the ground, she kicked me in the side several times.
- “Sister, must you always do this?’’ a smooth voice came.
- “Do you have pity for these humans?’’
- “No, I’m just saying, between you and the vampires. We won’t have many humans left to clean our toilets.’’
- She made a weird sound, then the kicks stopped.
- “Are you comparing me to those leeches?’’
- “No sister, maybe if you aren’t so hard headed and hot tempered you would understand. I am simply saying that the vampires suck these bottom feeders dry and you break them. They are dying faster than how they can procreate, and at this rate, there will be none left.’’
- “Get up!’’ the woman yelled at me.
- I tried to get to my feet, but the pain was unbearable.
- “Get up!’’ she kicked me in the side.
- “Serena, why don’t you go do something else and let me take care of this.’’
- I watched as Serena cocked her head to the left. “Have you gone soft, brother?’’
- “No, but I would like to keep these humans around longer so someone can continue cooking my meals and cleaning my room since neither of our parents have taught that to us.’’
- Serena only smiled at him in response, then got a handful of my hair and pulled me to my feet.
- When we got to the main house, we walked down to the bottom of the castle where rats scattered around, and the place smelt like piss.
- Serena kicked the door open and the occupants on the inside froze.
- “Is this what we brought you lot here for?’’ Serena roared.
- The music that was playing stopped as she kicked the small table the radio was on, causing it to shatter.
- “You little good for nothing trash, I tell my brother that he is giving you shits too much freedom. But just you wait, the true master of this kingdom will be returning soon, so he will be stepping down from his temporary post and I would love to see what you shits will do.’’
- Serena then threw me on the floor. “This bitch is your responsibility now.’’
