  • I sat on the cold, damp floor of the cell, my back pressed against the rough stone wall. The chill seeped into my bones, numbing my body, but not my mind. In the cell across from me, Seraphina hummed a tuneless melody, her eyes closed as if she were lost in some sick, twisted daydream. I wanted to shout at her, to tell her to stop with the senseless noise, but it wouldn’t do any good. She was enjoying this.
  • I closed my eyes, trying to block out the irritating sound.
  • ‘You are not just some helpless human,’ a voice said in my mind, startling me.
