- Katherine slept in my arms as we trudged through the forest. Her weight was nothing to me, but the burden of what we'd lost weighed heavily on my mind. The medical device with the cure was gone. Without it, Katherine would never be safe. The world would keep coming for her blood.
- "We need to stop soon," Michael said, checking Katherine's pulse for the fifth time in an hour. "She's exhausted."
