- I’d been drowning in a sea of black tar; somehow, I’d just swum up to the surface. The feeling of filling my lungs with oxygen again—not liquid—was freeing. Without Katherine, my brothers and I were as good as dead. We were drowning. Drowning in rage, despair, hopelessness, and heartbreak.
