• “What did you say?” Caitlin thought she heard wrong. Could this be another prank of Max’s? But why couldn’t she get rid of the panic that she was feeling? Caitlin’s hands were trembling. She was so nervous that she bumped her knee on the corner of the sofa when she got up, and the pain caused her to frown.
• “What’s wrong? Did something happen?” Mrs. Clarke was worried sick when she saw Caitlin act the way she did.
