• I watched as King Dane walked away, his broad shoulders stiff with restrained fury. The heavy doors shut behind him, leaving me alone with my brother. I hated that he had to leave, but it was better I confronted Finn alone. The last thing I wanted was for Finn to get battered by King Dane. He was walking on a thin rope each time he came here and it looked like his luck was running out. I didn’t know how much longer I could protect him from King Dane.
• I was surprised that King Dane listened to me. I thought he would object and whisper in my ear how he was going to punish me for interrupting him. But instead, he kept a cool head and walked out of the room. Maybe he was serious about the words he had spoken last night. He promised that he wasn’t going to let anybody hurt me. Not even my blood brother, Finn Slater.
