Chapter 39

  • Edgar could feel his fury boiling over. The man watched Edgar's anger for a moment, then turned and walked away, his steps slow and deliberate. Edgar stood frozen, his fists clenched, as he watched the man slowly disappear into the shadows of the surrounding buildings outside his premises. When he was finally gone, Edgar let out a deep breath, his anger draining away. He stood there, alone in the darkness, trying to make sense of what had just happened.
  • He took a few shaky steps back towards the house, his mind racing. What does Vivienne want this time? Why didn't she want to leave him alone? And what did the man mean by “what was coming”?
  • As Edgar walked up the short flight of stairs into the lobby, a horrible thought suddenly struck him. What if Vivienne had sent the man to harm Rosalind? And What if he was still lurking around in the bushes, waiting for the right time to strike, so he could capture Rosalind alone? Was he among her captors? It seemed impossible that her captors would be able to trace her here, but he couldn't shake the feeling that it might be true. Too many what ifs, but Edgar decided on one thing, which was to strengthen the security around his premises.
