Chapter 30 Don't Look At Me Again

  • POV: Amaia.
  • I stand frozen in place, not knowing what to do. I feel my heart racing, but this time, for completely different reasons than just a few minutes ago. My body assumes a defensive posture as I see him there, leaning against the wall, with a relaxed attitude that I recognize as fake. It's incredible that, despite the years that have passed, I can still know what's going on in his head, but I'm sure of what I believe. His blue eyes are the mirror of his reactions, they always have been, and now they look disappointed and... critical. I clench my jaw and grind my teeth, waiting for him to say something, to break the ice in this battle of wills. I would like to pretend indifference and keep my composure, but I can't do it with Audrey just a few meters away from us.
  • "I was beginning to think that your integrity was still intact, even though you work in that dive bar," he starts his attack, with a disgusted expression at the mention of my workplace. His words are hot irons piercing my stomach, because I know his intentions, but I remain silent. "I spent the whole day convincing myself that dancing half-naked doesn't mean that behind the scenes, you give yourself away like a whore in search of money."
