Chapter 4 Different Worlds
- “Let’s go, Riley.” After leaving the cemetery, she and Riley went to a pawn shop in the city center. Lauren knew she could pawn the ring off, but she didn’t expect it to be worth two hundred thousand.
- “Miss, this diamond here is top notch in both the raw material and craftsmanship. Are you sure you want to sell it?”
- Lauren frowned slightly, but then she smiled at the shopkeeper. “Yes, thank you very much.” Now that all her love was gone, there was no point holding on to a piece of rock. After selling the ring off, all the ties she had with Ethan was cut off.
- After getting the money, Lauren bought herself and Riley some clothes. When she and her child were exiting the mall, a Rolls-Royce Phantom almost crashed into them, but the driver managed to evade them by millimeters.
- “I’m sorry, Mr. Parker! They came out of nowhere, so I had to make an emergency brake!”
- The man who was holding his laptop looked up at the driver in front sharply, scaring him. The driver started stammering, and Ethan was about to chide him when he noticed someone familiar passing by. However, when he put down his laptop and tried to search for her, she was gone. “Drive.”
- When he got his orders, the driver quickly drove away, while Ethan seemed flustered for no reason. The sunlight shone into the car, but it didn’t drive away the darkness in his mind. Five years. It has been five years, but why can’t I forget about that damn woman? He held his head in deep contemplation, then a phone call broke his train of thought. When he saw who the caller was, Ethan smiled. “Hey, Nancy. What’s up?”
- “Ethan, my leg’s almost healed up now, so I should be back next month. Can you organize my solo cello performance then?”
- “Of course,” Ethan replied. “I should have been with you right now, but the company needs me.”
- “It’s fine, Ethan. I understand. My leg’s almost healed now, so don’t worry about me. Just remember to pick me up,” she said gently.
- “Okay,” he replied calmly and ended the call. Then Ethan leaned back and looked up. Since recently, whenever he closed his eyes, he could see a bloodied Lauren screaming that she didn’t kill his mother or hurt Nancy. I must be mad.
- Lauren and Riley came to Cloudfall City, a beautiful place neighboring the ocean. She rented a small house near the beach, but it was enough for her and Riley to stay. There was a kindergarten nearby too, so sending Riley there was convenient. Even though she had two hundred grand in her account, it was insufficient to support their expenses, so she had to work. However, because she was an ex-con, her criminal record became the biggest barrier in her job hunt. After running around when another company rejected her again, the kindergarten staff called her, saying Riley had fainted.
