- “I don’t understand, Kemi,” I said, the words coming out strained. The room felt suffocating. I looked from Kemi, standing there with that smirk on her face, to Funmi, who was standing just inside the doorway. Her eyes, wide and uncertain, flicked between us.
- “What’s going on here, Cole?” Funmi’s voice trembled, but there was a fire beneath it that I couldn’t ignore. “Why is she here?”
- I glanced back at Kemi, trying to keep my emotions in check, but there was something about her—something in the way she was standing there, unbothered by my anger—that made my skin crawl.
