• "How could you?" The words tore through the room, their weight crushing me. Funmi stood in the doorway, her eyes bloodshot, her face pale. She had every right to look at me like that, every right to feel the anger and hurt radiating from her. But nothing could have prepared me for the sharpness of her disappointment.
• I opened my mouth, but the words stuck. What was I supposed to say? What could I say that would make any of this better? I had lied to her, betrayed her trust in ways that I never thought I would. And now, standing in front of me, was the woman I loved—the one person I couldn’t afford to lose.
