• "Why didn't you tell me?" Funmi's voice was barely above a whisper, but it cut through me like a blade. We stood on opposite sides of the room, her arms crossed, her eyes full of hurt that I couldn't bear to face.
• "I... I didn't think it would be like this," I stammered, my heart pounding. "I thought I could handle it. Thought I could keep you out of it."
• Funmi shook her head slowly, a tear slipping down her cheek. "But you didn't. You've been keeping secrets from me, Cole. Big ones. And now it’s all out in the open. Kemi, John... your family—this war you’re in—it’s all I can think about. It's taking everything. And I don't know if I can do this anymore."
