Chapter 11

• “Did you know?” Funmi’s voice cuts through the silence like a knife, her words sharp, direct. I turn toward her, but she doesn’t give me a chance to answer.
• “Did you know about Kemi and John?” she presses, her eyes steady, searching for something in mine.
• I feel a chill run down my spine at the mention of John’s name. A name I’ve heard more than once, but only in passing, usually at family dinners or business meetings. The connection between Kemi and John has never been obvious to me before, and now, Funmi’s words rattle me in ways I’m not ready for.
