• Cole stood across from me, eyes wide with the kind of disbelief that mirrored my own. His face was pale, a stark contrast to the anger that was brewing just beneath the surface. I wanted to believe that he didn’t understand, that he couldn’t have known about John and Kemi, but I couldn’t lie to myself. The suspicion, the way everything had been falling apart—it all pointed to the truth.
• “I wish I wasn’t,” he finally said, his voice hoarse. “But she told me. Kemi... and John... they’ve been together for months, Funmi. And I—” He paused, his shoulders dropping with the weight of it all. “I never saw it coming.”
