Chapter 10

• As I followed Dante and Don Salvatore to the dining room, I noticed that Massimo, Matteo, and Luca were equally worn out from the night of celebration. I wasn't the only one trying to hide my hangover.
• Once we sat at the table, Gemma, the housekeeper, approached with large glasses of a thick, red liquid. She announced in a kind yet authoritative voice that it was “succo di pomodoro con sale e pepe” – tomato juice with salt and pepper.
• I stared at my glass in disgust. It was the last thing I wanted to drink that morning. I leaned toward Don Salvatore and whispered, hoping the others wouldn't hear, “Do you really think it's necessary to drink this?”
