- "Are you sure you've cooked this before?" Liam asked Emma, who nodded hesitantly, obviously lying, "I don't want to burn down my stepfather's house, Emma..."
- The girl chuckled; she was disheveled, wearing a long t-shirt that Liam had lent her, they had both made the decision that if they didn't want to die of a stomach infection, they had to start cooking their own food - they had tried it before and it hadn't worked at all; they had left everything raw, or too salty, so they had started buying food on the street, one that had landed them in the toilet for almost a full month. Emma picked up the thick strip of meat, watching the pan smoking vigorously.
- "I know exactly what I'm doing, I saw my mother do this once," she reassured him, omitting the fact that it was about eight years ago.
