Chapter 42
- Ember and I lingered in my bedroom well into the afternoon, the silence between us only broken by the arrival of the dinner cart. We spoke in hushed tones about a myriad of topics. Beta Jaxon had taken over Magnus’s old room, a change that left me unsettled. It troubled me how easily Magnus had been replaced—just a faceless bodyguard to everyone else. I couldn't fathom someone else filling his role. Despite my initial aversion to the idea of a bodyguard, I now wished desperately for Magnus's return. I owed him that much.
- Ember and I were also grappling with another issue: finding evidence against Mason Beaumont.
- “How are we supposed to get proof when he’s thousands of miles away?” Ember groaned, collapsing onto my bed.
