  • When Ember wanted something, she made sure she got it. It was clear she was born to lead—her voice and the conviction behind it made that obvious. Just like her mother, Aura, Ember had a way of asserting herself that was impossible to ignore.
  • “Aura, I might not have the strength, but I will pick you up and toss you into this bath if I have to,” Ember said with a grimace, hands on her hips as she glared at me.
  • She’d been running the bath for the past half hour, claiming she’d put “the works” into it. I wasn’t sure what that entailed, but I had my suspicions.
