Chapter 6
- She knew his name but wasn’t going to let him have the satisfaction of anything!
- “Mr. Knight” she said as she finally gave Caleb a glance for the first time since sitting down.
- Her hazel eyes were bewitching. He had always loved seeing her eyes. But something was different about them. There something more cold about them now. They didn’t have that spark he always loved seeing in them.
- “I did.” He said never looking away from her eyes.
- Without looking away his hand grabbed his portfolio that he had brought with him and handed it over the table to Harper. She looked at it for a moment before bringing her hand up to take it.
- He watched as her slim beautiful hand reached up from the table and grabbed onto his portfolio. Her slim fingers gripping it before lightly pulling it from his grasp.
- She then looked down and silently looked through it.
- Not saying a word. Her face never showed any expression. He couldn’t tell with her if she liked anything or hated it. He could normally see how she felt through her expressions she made. But she was like a rock. She didn’t have any expressions.
- She then closed the portfolio in her hand and handed back to Caleb.
- The other publishers didn’t say anything, at this point he knew she out ranked each one of them, her preference was all that mattered. And he knew she probably didn’t want anything to do with him.
- “We will be in contact Mr. Knight.” She said with a slow and serious tone as she stood up and grabbed her purse.
- “Arthur, James, Philip, it was nice having dinner with you all again. Do call more often, I quite like your company.” She said with a smile and left the booth.
- All three publishers stood and said their goodbyes as she walked away.
- Caleb still hadn’t taken his eyes off of her. Her scrawny limp body she had in high school was a complete difference from what he watched walk away from him.
- Her body was perfectly shaped. He dress hugging her slim waist and wide hips. Her butt was tightly squeezed in the dress as were her breast. Her form was beautiful as each heel touched the floor.
- Then snapping out of his lustful gaze he stood up and said his goodbyes to the three publishers and rushed to follow her.
- “Harper.” He called walking like a fire was behind him. Speeding up so he could reach her before she was gone again.
- “Harper” he called again, but she kept walking as she walked through the front doors of the restaurant and put a pair of sunglasses on. She stood holding her purse in front of her as her legs were crossed one leg in front of the other.
- Finally Caleb reached her. “Harper” he said panting as if he had just ran a marathon.
- Her expression or glance didn’t change she ignored him.
- “I know you don’t like me…”
- That got her attention as he could see her eyes dark from behind her slim sunglasses in his direction. He was quite happy he couldn’t see her hazel eyes all that well. They did something to him.
- “I would like to work with your company. I think I could be a good fit.”
- “I believe that is my decision to make.” She replied.
- “It is but I would really appreciate if you’d reconsider me. I know…”
- “Before you bore me with whatever dumbass nonsense is about abrupt from your lips let me make something very clear to you Mr. Knight.”
- Her saying his name like that, as if they didn’t know each other, stung deep.
- “I don’t care about personal things when it comes to business and I can make it abundantly clear that they do not judge my opinions at work. Personal feeling is not something I use, I will decide to hire you if I believe your work quality is up to par. So whatever personal feeling you may have keep them to yourself. If I ran a business with feeling I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
- Caleb stood silent.
- “Good day Mr. Knight. I will be in contact with you if I believe you are suited to work with my company.”
- “Harper.” A man’s voice said.
- Caleb looked over to see a man holding a door open to a black car. Harper then walked over to him.
- “Thank you, Ethan” she said lightly grazing his arm with her hand.
- She sat down in the car as the man closed the door behind her and got in on the passenger side front seat. And then the car was gone. And Caleb was standing alone watching it drive away. He felt a pain, the same pain he felt when he saw her moving truck leave all those years ago. But also a different pain. Who was this Ethan guy? Was that Mr. Black? Was that her husband?
- He never thought he would ever see her again. But the hazel green eyes were back and all he could hope is that she’d give him a chance, and he’d slowly show her he cares about her. If she isn’t already taken.
