Chapter 1
- Senior Year*
- “Ready! Set! Hut!” Caleb called out as he caught the ball thrown to him and then with swift footwork be backed away and scanned the field. He eyes landed on the best receiver they hand and he tossed the ball watching it land in his arms and running it to the end zone. Caleb sighed and removed his helmet. It was only a practice drill but still. He knew soon it was going to be a real game and all he had worked for was soon going to happen. Recruiters would be at his next game and he needed to play well.
- But the thing was Caleb hating being a quarterback. He hating playing football. He only joined the team for his dad who was a very controlling man. He had Caleb’s whole life planned out before his 5th birthday. Football quarterback who would be drafted into the NFL. Cheerleader girlfriend who he would marry and have 2 kids with.
- A addition career that would be done in the side for extra income and that he’d support his parents most of their lives.
- Though Caleb despised being a football player and being called a jock, he hated his girlfriend Bethany even more. The woman was a bore. He found her a bit annoying most of the time and ignored her the other half. The other half being when he’d hear about all the trouble she’d cause with other girls. Bethany wasn’t ugly and most of the football team always talked about how HOT she was but Caleb didn’t seem to notice or care for that matter. She wasn’t his type. He only did it to please his dad.
- *But Harper Bing was.*
- Harper was the lead photographer and writer for the yearbook. Had been since their freshman year. She loved writing and taking photos and she did it well. Though she was just an ordinary girl in their school. Something about her hazel green eyes always drew him to her. There’s always a spark in her eyes every time he looked into them.
- He occasionally would catch her taking photos of him for the yearbook and couldn’t help and always go up to say hi.
- Caleb’s true passion was photography. He loved it but his dad always said that wouldn’t pay his way into college. So he didn’t pursue it. But on a few occasions Harper showed him how to use her camera and even allowed him to take a few photos for the yearbook. She even gave him the credit for the photos he took and put his name as the photographer in the yearbook.
- “Hey!” Caleb called out as Harper snapped a few photos.
- “Hi.” She whispered as he ran up to her.
- “Got any good shots of me.”
- Harper giggled. “I guess you’ll have to wait and see.”
- “I guess I will.”
- “Caleb! Baby!” A voiced called.
- Harper turned to see Bethany running up to Caleb with her cute cheerleading outfit. And her blonde shimmering hair in the sun. Slamming her perfect body into his and planting a kiss right on his lips.
- “Beth.” He said as he pulled her off of him. He knew what she was trying to do. He turned to Harper but she had already left. He could see her walking in the distance.
- “What the hell was that about?” He turned to Bethany.
- “I just thought I’d kiss my boyfriend.”
- He rolled his eyes. “I’m going back to practice.” He said as he put his helmet back on and ran onto the field.
- Bethany watched and then put her hands on her hips and looked in Harper’s direction. And then Bethany smiled an evil grin and ran to her fellow cheerleaders.
- The next day Harper was putting some books in her locker when she heard giggling from behind her.
- “Oh look. It’s the heppa nerd.” One of the cheerleaders said.
- “My name is Harper.” Harper said back.
- And then without a second more Harper’s body was pushed into the lockers. Her face slamming against the lock as she was closing it. Her body fell to the floor and she was bleeding from her forehead now.
- She looked up to see Bethany and her squad.
- Bethany grinned and leaned down. “Hate to see you like this slut. But I think you should learn a lesson and you should get your own boyfriend and stop flirting with mine.”
- “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Harper said trying to stand up.
- But before she could she was pushed again against the locker this time hitting the back of her head. Harper’s hand went up and to the back of her head to where the pain was coming from.
- “Don’t play with me dumbass. You’re a no body. And a no body doesn’t get to talk to me or Caleb.”
- “I don’t think you make decisions for others”
- Bethany huffed and then stomped down on Harper’s ankle.
- A scream came from her lips that was loud enough for the whole hallway to hear.
- “Will see” Bethany hissed as she and her squad stomped away.
- Harper sat on the floor for a while holding her ankle. It was already swollen and red and throbbing, it was in so much pain.
- “Are you okay?” A deep voice asked. Harper looked up to see Caleb walking her direction.
- She immediately tried to stand up, but it was pointless the moment she stepped down the pain shot through her body and a small squeal of pain slipped her lips as her body hurdled to the floor.
- But Caleb caught her. “Here I’ll help you to the nurse.”
- “It’s okay I can go on my own.”
- “I insist.” Caleb said with a stern voice as he wrapped his hand around her waist and pulled her arm over his shoulder.
- Harper watched as he helped her through the crowded hallways and to the nurses office.
- “Nurse.” Caleb called as they entered the room.
- “Harper, you’re hurt again.” The nurse said walking straight to her.
- Caleb’s glance went straight to Harper and she could swear she heard him whisper “again?”
- “Come sit down and let’s ice that ankle. And get that cut some ointment.”
- Harper nodded and Caleb help her onto one of the beds.
- “Thank you Caleb I can take it from here. You don’t want to get in trouble for being late. Mater of fact take this. And tell your teacher you were helping me.”
- “Thank you Nurse Joy.” Caleb replied. He glanced at Harper before leaving. He couldn’t help but feel some pain for her. She seemed really hurt.
- “I wonder what happened?” Caleb asked himself as he left.
