• Manny had sent for the guards as I’d asked. They walked in one by one, heads down, clearly uncomfortable. The tension in the room was thick. I stood in the center. My eyes scanning the line of guards. These were the same ones who had been on duty the night Louis came through the gate with the northern breeder. I needed to know how they’d allowed that to happen. How had they let Louis bring her in without noticing?
