Chapter 8
- I didn’t have the answer to that question. To me, it was a stupid question, and it wasn’t worth paying attention to. When my wolf was done, he would rest.
- I took a walk into the pack’s library, and was greeted by my people. They seemed so flustered to see me around, and it made me happy. Though, I never hurt them, but still they had to fear me as their leader. A leader must never be too down to earth, or it may breed room for disrespect.
- I called one of the library boys, and asked him to give me very book on mating that he could find. His name was Tennessee, and he was green eyed, and calm. He had not gotten his wolf yet, and therefore, he hid in the safety of the library to avoid being bullied by his peers.
- I knew he would definitely get it. But, maybe, he was doing something wrong. That made me think of what I may have done wrong to get punished by the moon goddess in such a way. I didn’t like how much I had been pushed down by being a human’s mate.
- Though, I had told them not to say a word about it to anyone, but I was sure that it was only a matter of time for the news to reach every individual in the pack. I wasn’t looking forward to that at all.
- My eyes schemed the rows of books that had a purifying liquid on its case. It was a self-cleanser to make it easy for the workers to keep the library pure and clean.
- In a space of thirty minutes, Tennessee was back with his hand full of books. He looked quite flustered as he handed them over to me. I was going to make sure that I poured through each and everyone of it.
- I grabbed it from him, and gave him two rands to be able to buy what ever it was that he wanted, and then, I made my way back to my palace. There was this anger I felt in me as I thought about going through the book. I hated that I had lost my peace of mind because of all these.
- There was a time, I cried to the moon goddess to give me a mate, and now, I didn’t want to have anything to do with the one I had been offered. On getting to my room, the guards flanked the door on every side, and I smiled at that. They never stopped working until I told them too.
- “I don’t want any disturbance,” I said said coldly.
- They bowed low in respect. The closest one opened the door to my room, and I went in. I walked to the table immediately, pulling off my clothes, and sitting in my cotton briefs. When I was in my room, I liked to be bare, and not all dressed up.
- My fingers slowly touched the book as I read it’s contents slowly. It was important not to rush, or I might miss some important detail. I was specifically looking for how to destroy a bond between a human and a werewolf.
- It only highlighted on destroying the bond between a werewolf and another werewolf, which was quite simple. You will simply reject the bond in the face of the other person.
- I know it’s something I should do, but I couldn’t bring myself to do that. Erika’s warning was still ringing deep in my head. I needed to be careful so I wouldn’t endanger the lives of my people. This was the more reason, I was reading all these, so I could get an hindsight on how best to handle the situations.
- In a space of thirty minutes, I was done with four book, but I haven’t gotten any inkling of how to destroy the bond between a human and a werewolf. I was completely clueless.
- I slammed the book down in frustration and tossed my head backwards. I was so angry with it all.
- Damn it!
- Out of my mind’s eyes, I saw Leonie looking at me with sad eyes. It hurt to look at. I sat up immediately, my temper reeling. She had no right to get into my thoughts.
- “I hate you, Leonie. I hate you!” I snapped, as I glared at the books.
- Suddenly, I heard my mom, Lino Royale, talking to the guards. I frowned slightly, and mind-linked them not to let her in. The last thing I wanted was her unwarranted interference. She could be very persuasive, and since she had waited till forever for me to have a mate, I could only imagine how desperate she was going to be when she found out the truth, and I didn’t want that at all.
- “I would like to see my son. Tell him that I’m here,” mother grumbled.
- I blocked her out, and took a silver coloured book. It could be the one that would take me to the truth. Despite, how much I blocked the noise, I could hear mother as she fought with the guards so she could get in. I didn’t sorry for them, despite how she could be. It was their duty to keep her at bay no matter what.
- Slowly, the noise dwindled down, and I focused on the books, trying to see where I could get the truth from.
- ***
- I slowly tied the rope that threatened to fall off my shoulders. I was worried about my son, Alpha Gunnolf. I had barely seen him in two days which was so unlike him, and I really wanted to meet him.
- I stared at the guards who stopped me from going into my son’s room. I knew he must have given them the order, but it was no less annoying. These people were literally getting on my nerves at this point.
- “Look, get me in there right now!” I snapped.
- Gabriel shook his head. “I’m so sorry, Queen mother, but you need to understand that the Alpha has given specific instructions that he doesn’t want to be disturbed.”
- “I’m his mother,” I said stubbornly.
- He nodded grimly. “I know that, but we are his workers. I can’t ignore his order because I know he would have my neck. Do come back later,” he said stiffly.
- I sighed in annoyance. There was no way I would be getting into the room like this. I made a show of going back to my room, only for me to turn back and race past them.
- The guards caught me easily, and I swore under my breath. This was so bad, and it wasn’t working. How long would they be treating me this way? It was getting annoying now.
- “Let go of me,” I said in half disgust.
- They didn’t, until they had carried me a good distance away from my son’s room. I looked at it longingly. I could feel his pain like it was mine. I wondered what must have happened for him to react this way.
- The guards placed me on my feet, and then, as one, they turned their back away from me. I couldn’t let them go. Surely, they must have known something because they were always with him.
- “Gabriel,” I said calmly.
- He turned to me, and bowed in respect. I knew it was hard for him to treat me this way because I had been the one to find him when he had gone rogue from the Midnight Pack after the death of his parents. He always believed that he owed me his life.
- “Queen mother,” he said calmly.
- “Do not worry. I will not tell you to do what the Alpha hates. Tell me, why my son has locked himself in that room for hours,” I demanded.
- He sighed. “I’m sorry, but I do not know. We are not privy to most of his affairs,” he informed me.
- I gritted my teeth in anger. It didn’t seem like he was telling me the truth, but there would be another way to find it out. I had not been home last night because of my monthly conditioning. I would have found out firsthand, but not to worry, I could still do that.
- “Ok, that’s alright. But, surely something must have happened in my absence. Tell me what it is,” I demanded.
- I watched as he lowered his head, and he clasped his hands at his back. I was right something had happened.
- “There is only one thing that I know. A human girl came here breaking the shield. She is presently at the dungeon,” he explained.
- I nodded once, and he made himself scarce. A human girl? Of course, I knew how much Archer hated humans, but it was not enough reason for him to be downcast. It was more than that, and I was going to find out what it was. Whoever this human girl was, she had my son shook.
